The Fluffernutter Sandwich was a staple of my childhood. I wasn’t often given lunch money and when I was, you could bet your life I was headed straight for the Bosco Sticks. But for all those brown-bag days, nothing could excite me more than finding a Fluffernutter sandwich.

Now, we all know that the PB&J sandwich is king of the school-lunch. That’s just math. But if PB&J is an institution, Fluffernutter is a mood.

This simple Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Creme classic was the highest form of sack lunch sustenance that my grade-school mind could fathom.

As grown-ups, we may presume that combining salty and sweet flavors is a result of our refined culinary maturity (“Ooo! Salty Caramel!”), but really, it all started with the Fluffernutter: Salty peanut butter and sweet sweet marshmallow fluff.

When Was the Fluffernutter Invented?

The origin story of the Fluffernutter sandwich (and the invention of Marshmallow Fluff) goes back to WWI-era New England. The first recorded recipe of a fluffernutter is dated 1918 and hasn’t really changed since. Why mess with a good thing, right? There is even a catchy Fluffernutter jingle from the 1960’s.

It’s no wonder then, that many New Englanders take pride in and have some strong feelings about all things Fluffernutter. They even celebrate their Fluff heritage by hosting an annual Fluff-themed festival called “What the Fluff?” in the town of Sommerville, MA (the birthplace of Marshmallow Fluff).

As recently as 2006, a proposed Fluffernutter ban (citing the sandwich’s lack of nutritional value) sparked a debate amidst the Massachusetts legislature which eventually resulted in October 8th being declared National Fluffernutter Day here in the United States! (“Proud to be an American” plays in the background…)

What is the difference between marshmallow cream and marshmallow fluff?

Marshmallow creme and marshmallow fluff are both made from the same basic ingredients and both have a similar taste and texture. They’re both a scoopable, spreadable marshmallow goo that lives somewhere between a liquid and a solid.

Technically, “marshmallow fluff” is a trademarked product and the original marshmallowy concoction. However, we’ve found you can use them interchangeably for fluffernutters and any other recipe calling for fluff or creme.

How to Make a Classic Fluffernutter Sandwich

  1. Get 2 pieces of fluffy White Bread.
  2. Spread peanut mutter on one slice.
  3. Spread marshmallow fluff on the other slice. Don’t be shy!
  4. Put them together and enjoy!

Pro Tip: These sandwich spreaders are some of the best $7 you can spend. They make spreading mayo, peanut butter, or mustard allll the way to the edges of your bread a breeze!

Take Your Fluffernutters to the Next Level

The classic sandwich is good. But you can really take it up a notch by giving it some extras. I’m talking about adding some banana slices, and grilling the bread.

For sandwiches, grilling changes everything. I’ve written about the wonders of the , but this Grilled Fluffernutter Sandwich is like the PB&J’s crazy awesome, eccentric aunt.

The bread is golden and crisp, the insides are a molten stream of peanut butter and marshmallow. It’s a hot mess of goodness, so bring some extra napkins.

When I need a quick snack, I’ll revisit the classic recipe, but as an adult I prefer the grotesquely comforting Grilled Fluffernutter Sandwich, because, well, I’ve evolved (and melted peanut butter is basically a narcotic).
