You know that English has silent letters, but how do you know when certain letters are silent? In this video, you’ll learn the rules for when NOT to pronounce the letters B
, D
, and L
in English words. I’ll also show you lots of example words that you can practice pronouncing correctly. I’ve chosen the most common words with these silent letters, so that even if you don’t remember the rules, you’ll still know how to pronounce these common words correctly. This is also a great chance for you to improve your spelling.

Congrats to both of you! Keep up the good work!
Frankly speaking, I didn’t know there were rules for when not to pronounce some letters in English until now.
I learned to pronounce many of these words as they come up. However,I was always aware of silent letters in the English language.
Superb lesson on pronunciation Emma.
Bye for now.

Thank you Emma ,
Are there rules for the pronounciation of “i”
Sometimes it is pronouced in its spelling form and other times like a “e” or like a shwa sound . It sounds weird when you don’t know the word with an “i” you are saying and you mispronounce it , worse than a word with silent consonant .
Hope you can make a lesson on that
Bye

Thank you very much , Emma. The lesson is very useful. Now I guess ,why when I read and then I listen the same text ,it sounds differently ,more softly . The reason is in silent b,d and l. As was said , the secret is in simple things.

10/10 for these words, i hope, i wouldn’t forget their pronunciation while talking.
sebernet
can i ask you a question? i’ve been testing myself for over a year. And all results i reached that i was upper-intermediate. how could i take a leap forward from upper-intermediate to advanced? by that i mean, from now on,what should i very work on?
sebernet
Hi Sebernet
I think you should read more in English in order to improve your writing skills .
As well, you need to watch English movies without translation or subtitles, and listen more to improve your pronunciation and listening skills .
wish you all the best :)

Hello teacher ,
Your lessons are so magnificent, keep teaching like that .
Well ,there is one word that no clear for me this is the word “scramble”,can we pronounce b ?
Thank so much for teaching.
Danny weld
Hi Danny. That rule in the lesson refer to ‘mb’ at the end of a word, so in ‘scramble’ letter ‘b’ is not silent. rgds ;)
ChrisGfn
Yes finally I made 10/10
ruben123
Excuse me mam,’B’ is not pronounced after ‘t’ you had written.Either ‘B’ is not pronounced before ‘t’ or after ‘t’? Please clarify me ,Mam.
Ravi621
Nice Emma, it’s really awesome and helpful for foreigner learner. With due respect Emma on board you wrote B will be silent after t but I thing it would be written before t…….I am sure you wouldn’t mind….

As we know that always there is an exceptions. Right !

Many thanks Emma.
When will the next letters?
I found a difference in pronunciation with other words (eg: sword which is pronounced “sord” and sworn which is pronounced “sWorn”).
Thank you
epamynondas
“Sword” is the only word I can think of with a silent “w”, unless you count “two”. Very strange. English is full of these random exceptions.
engVid Moderator
Maybe, but I’ve already heard other phenomena of this kind with, mainly the letters S, T, P, D and H and also a few vowels. As for the W I think there’s also the word “answer”. When I listen to WordReference I don’t hear any W.
epamynondas
You’re right, I completely forgot about that one!
